better life, relationship or job
with these specific free tips.

Congratulations on taking the first step toward success. Whether starting a new job, project or vocation, finding ways to gain a deeper understanding of your new environment is one of the most effective things you can do. As with any new trip or venture, there are a myriad of exciting things to do and intriguing people to meet. At the heart of it all, is change itself.

By its very nature change challenges existing priorities which in turn impacts emotions – both yours and the people around you. Clarifying what you want to achieve, creating your own personal roadmap to get there and building up your resilience are conducive to success as well as peace of mind!

Learning more about your new environment, the industry and the competition, while working toward achieving a quarterly expectation is a race against the clock of ninety days. This honeymoon period is over in a flash and although you may be given some benefit of the doubt, your actions with respect to how you respond to events are being observed and evaluated.

In fact, according to research conducted by Manchester Inc, a leadership development firm, based in Bala Cynwyd, PA, close to 40% of newly appointed managers and executives will fail within eighteen months of starting new jobs. “Failing” includes being terminated for lack of performance, not meeting expectations or resigning early, voluntarily.

The top five causes of failure were identified as follows:

  • Challenges with cultural fit.............................................75%

  • Failure to build teamwork with staff and peers..........52%

  • Unclear expectations........................................................33%

  • Lacking internal political savvy......................................25%

  • No formal method for assimilation into the firm..........22%

Statistics such as these provide invaluable clues as to what to do 'right' to help ensure success that is sustainable over time. Staying ahead of the curve involves focusing on:

  • Learning about the company, business or initiative in more depth

  • Gaining commitment from team members and/or associates

  • Clarifying expectations with all parties concerned

  • Building partnerships with key stakeholders

  • Recognizing and managing the impact of change on the people

Based on our 20+ years of business experience along with our research of best practices, below you will find key elements required for success. The “1st 90 Days Activities Checklist”; encompasses strategy, culture, people, processes and personal fitness.

Your First 90 Days

You've landed the job, relationship or organization you've had your eye on for a while. Now the difficult part begins. Forget the idea of a honeymoon period. It's time to get to the hard work, right now, because the first 90 days of anything can mean everything.

Have You Done Everything You Can To Prepare?

“You need to hit the ground running two weeks before you walk in”, says Michelle Smith, senior vice president and in-vestment officer at Wachovia Securities. Not preparing properly, Smith says, is a recipe for disaster. “At the minimum, did you read last year's annual report? There is no excuse for not having information when you walk in.”

Are You In Good Enough Shape?

Because the early days of any job can be a grind, it's important to be physically prepared. Eat well, sleep well, exercise, do anything you can to keep your energy level up going in.

Did You Do Your Homework?

Learn all you can about your new situation, whether it's a job, a relationship or a vacation. “I started thinking about ways I could make a difference, went to the company Web site, talked to people in the company, read all I could”, says Gloria Johnson Goins, vice president of diversity and inclusion at The Home Depot.

STOP, LOOK & Listen

Stop, look and listen, remember that from kindergarden? Make sure you understand how things work before you try to change things. “We encourage people not to do too much too soon”, says Erskine-Smith of Goldman Sachs. “It's a very strong culture here, and it's working as a team that will get someone ahead, as opposed to acting in a counterproductive way. You don't want to come in and try to change the world until you know what the world is actually about. We want people to ask lots and lots of questions.”

Find Yourself A Guide!

Most people wouldn't walk into a strange place without a guide, you should either. Within the first month of her job, Johnson Goins reached out to The Home Depot's longest-tenured senior officer and asked him to be her mentor. “I have met with him monthly for two and a half years”, she says. “He's really made the difference in my career in terms of navigating a very large company.”

Speak Easy - NOT!

Don't take for granted you know how people talk, communicate or dress. Learning the tacit protocols so you don't damage your image and reputation may be the most leveraging thing you ever do. NEVER take for granted how people really think about you in the beginning, always let them guide you and show you what you don't know you don't know.

Strengths Are Your Friends

“Inform through limitations, reform through strengths,” writes Mike Jay in CPR for the Soul: Coaching Personal Resilience By Design. Working from a know source of strength lightens your load in the 1st 90 Days.
